Easy work compared to Maryland blue crabs. and consider your picking style. some will get a nugget of goodness and eat it right away. some will wait till they accumulate a little pile and then eat. i'm the latter type. was at a get together and a "child" (neighbor's kid) started reaching toward MY pile of blue crab meat!! he was about 8 yo and i stopped him dead in his tracks. he KNEW how to pick a crab and what to and not to eat. he tried to give me that "but i'm just a kid" look... didn't work. i don't think crabs can be picked by machine with any success. that explains the price... it's all hand-picked. i think it's great when kids are introduced to a wide variety of foods instead of just chicken nuggets (go watch a youtube video on "mechanically separated" meat) and fries. show them how to deal with crabs. as CSN&Y said... "teach your children well"! |

I mean, i like crab meat but not the work of it. that's why, when fresh/refrigerated/in-can is on sale you buy it. if it's $30/lb regularly and on sale for $24/lb, that's a good deal. a can is fine in your fridge for 6 months or more. make sure to look at labels on cans! once bought a can of Phillip's crab meat at an incredibly low price. only thing i read on label was... lump or backfin. when i got home, thought there might be an interesting recipe on the can. hey, that fresh crab meat labelled "Philip's" (some will need to google to get what i'm getting at) came from the other side of the globe. crab cakes from that "foreign" jumbo lump made some pretty damn tasty eating, but i would have preferred "made in the USA". d2lnr5mha7bycj.cloudfront.net/product-image/file/large_049b60a0-61a0-4f13-9288-965519a7874a.jpg |
