CNN CEO Mark Thompson is reportedly planning layoffs that could affect hundreds of employees following the network’s low ratings during last week’s Election Night coverage.
The cuts are expected to target high-paid on-air talent and production staff as part of a shift to a digital-first strategy.
CNN, which drew just 5.1 million prime-time viewers on Election Night, lagged behind MSNBC’s 6 million viewers and Fox News’ audience of over 10 million viewers.
The network’s workforce is said to be coping with “an atmosphere of high stress and high anxiety,” according to reports.
Thompson may also push for salary reductions for top anchors like Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett. One of the highest-paid CNN stars, Chris Wallace, announced he was leaving the network after three years.
