SCOTUS Cuts Federal Agencies’ Power
The Supreme Court overturned the 40-year-old Chevron deference doctrine in a major ruling on Friday. The doctrine had given federal agencies the power to interpret ambiguous laws and required courts to defer to their decisions. In a 6-3 ruling, the conservative justices reined in that authority, saying instead that courts must independently decide on regulatory interpretations, rather than agency officials. The decision, which reflects the court’s skepticism toward expansive regulatory powers by the government, was celebrated by business and conservative groups. www.reuters.com/legal/us-supreme-court-curbs-federal-agency-powers-overturning-1984-precedent-2024-06-28/
