The Chinese government banned what it called "sissy men" from television Thursday and directed broadcasters to serve the people of China with "revolutionary culture."
The change to eliminate what China calls effeminate men from the national spotlight comes as President Xi Jinping leads a government campaign to tighten control over society at large in China and reinforce official views on morality.
The requirement reportedly came from the Chinese Communist Party's concerns that its pop stars will adopt what it described as the more effeminate trends of South Korean and Japanese singers and actors.
The party fears such a radical shift would emasculate China's young men.
A government regulator said that broadcasters are required to "resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics," according to the Associated Press.
The report also mentioned that the regulator used the derogatory term for feminine-looking men, "niang pao," meaning "girlie guns," in the directive.
The Chinese Communist Party's "national rejuvenation" effort has also reduced children's access to online games to three hours a week, and it will punish any celebrity who "violates public order" or "lost morality."
The regulator said broadcasters should avoid propagating "vulgar internet celebrities," as well as a lust for wealth.
Rather, the communist party suggested national television should "vigorously promote excellent Chinese traditional culture, revolutionary culture and advanced socialist culture."
