A suspect is in custody after a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, that occurred on Wednesday and casualties have been reported, according to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office.
A local hospital is "treating multiple gunshot wounds," a source told ABC News.
Senior Sergio Caldera, 17, said he first heard gunshots inside the school at 11 a.m.
"My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter," Caldera said, according to the ABC report.
Caldera said that he witnessed someone pounding on the classroom door and shouting "open up!" repeatedly. He heard gunshots and screams after the knocking stopped.
"I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state," Gov. Brian Kemp, R-Ga., said in a statement on X.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is reportedly on-site at the school.
