Didn’t know that I’ve Googled “check engine light” and the make and model of my car A code reader will give you a code and you can Google the code to narrow down the possible problems. A better code reader will give you a description of the problem with the code.

A good one will cost over $150
But I booked an appointment Wednesday with the repair shop
$90 for analysis

Didn’t know that I’ve Googled “check engine light” and the make and model of my car if you have Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts stores (and probably several other chains), they'll scan your car for free and tell you what the code is. the most common reason for check engine light is... loose gas cap.

You're not kidding. We were on vacation and the check engine light came on. A local mechanic tried to say it was a major issue and would take a day to fix and $500. I drove it home and my mechanic took the gas cap off and put it back on...voila!
